HISTORY OF SWANA

SWANA was originally founded in 1962. The South Carolina Chapter received its charter at the 1990 Annual Business Meeting on August 23, 1990 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The SC Chapter now has over 250 members! The membership is a diverse group of public and private sector professionals in the solid waste industry. The Chapter is focused on providing training and annually presenting conferences to support professionals in all aspects of solid waste including waste collection, disposal, gas collection, permitting, design, and operations. We hope you will join us at one of our upcoming events.

SAFETY

Third Thursday of September is

SAFETY DAY!

Good Afternoon,

SWANA would like to remind our members that Safety Day is the Third Thursday of September (September 18th, 2025), and we want you to join us as we continue to focus on the safe handling and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium batteries pose a significant safety risk for the solid waste and recycling professionals that are handling these items. In addition to the safety concerns for our employees, our facilities that receive them for recycling, or our disposal facilities that inadvertently receive them mixed in a waste load, are also at risk. Lithium-ion batteries come in all shapes and sizes, are found in a wide variety of products and can pose a serious threat if not managed properly.

This year we will be giving out $500 to one of the facilities that help us spread awareness on the safe handling of these batteries.

To enter the drawing:

(1) Print out copies of the enclosed flyer;

(2) Distribute it to the haulers visiting your facility on September 18th;

(3) Snap a picture of your staff handing out the flyer; and,

(4) Send it to our email address: info@scswana.org.

We will notify the winner by September 19th!

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the SC Chapter of SWANA, we hope you will take this opportunity to participate in SWANA’s Safety Day by sharing this information with your haulers and staff. Be sure to let everyone know they need to “Be Battery Smart”.

Let’s get charged up for battery safety!
